چکیده

The idea that serious mental illnesses, such as autism and schizophrenia, result fromabnormalconnectivityamong largescale brain networks is gaining widespread acceptance. Efforts to test hypotheses of dysconnectivity have historically been hindered by tools with insufficient spatial resolution to investigatehumanbrain connectivity in vivo and an incomplete understanding of the large-scaleorganizationof the brain, the so-called connectome. Thedevelopment of resting-state functional connectivitymagnetic resonance imaging (rs-fcMRI) has profoundly affected our understanding of the functional organization of the brain, both in health and illness. The investigation by Cerliani and colleagues1 in this issuedescribesabnormal cortical-subcortical connectivity in the brains of individuals with autism. In this Editorial, we briefly review rs-fcMRI methods; summarize several key rs-fcMRI findings in 2 exemplary dysconnectivity-associatedpsychiatric illnesses, schizophrenia and autism; and discuss the potential uses for rs-fcMRI in the search for biomarkers of psychiatric disorders.

Resting-state Functional Connectivity During Controlled Respiratory Cycles Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the effect of controlled mouth breathing during the resting state using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods: Eleven subjects participated in this experiment in which the controlled “Nose” and “Mouth” breathings of 6 s respiratory cycle were performed with a visual cue at 3T MRI. Voxel-wise seed-to-voxel maps and whole-brain region of i...

Alterations in Hippocampal Functional Connectivity in patients with Mesial Temporal Sclerosis

Introduction: Medial temporal sclerosis (MTS) is a form of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE). It is typically characterized by structural alterations in hippocampus (HC) and related mesial temporal lobe (MTL) network. Resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) is considered an ideal technique in quantifying the dysfunction and maladaptation in MTL network. It is well- dem...

Measuring and manipulating brain connectivity with resting state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

Both resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are increasingly popular techniques that can be used to non-invasively measure brain connectivity in human subjects. TMS shows additional promise as a method to manipulate brain connectivity. In this review we discuss how these two complimentary tools can be combined to optimally study b...

Antidepressant medications reduce subcortical–cortical resting-state functional connectivity in healthy volunteers

Studies have revealed abnormalities in resting-state functional connectivity in those with major depressive disorder specifically in areas such as the dorsal anterior cingulate, thalamus, amygdala, the pallidostriatum and subgenual cingulate. However, the effect of antidepressant medications on human brain function is less clear and the effect of these drugs on resting-state functional connecti...

Subclinical depression severity is associated with distinct patterns of functional connectivity for subregions of anterior cingulate cortex.

Depression is a prevalent psychiatric condition characterized by sad mood and anhedonia. Neuroscientific research has consistently identified abnormalities in a network of brain regions in major depression, including subregions of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). However, few studies have investigated whether the same neural correlates of depression symptom severity are apparent in subclini...
